Visitors from Binus University

Earlier this week, two groups of university students from Binus University visited our school to make a presentation for their assignment. The first group discussed gender equality, emphasizing its significance, especially in Indonesia, due to traditional customs passed down from our ancestors. Gender equality remains a sensitive and taboo issue here. They also examined gender equality in the workplace, highlighting that in some offices, men often receive higher-paying positions, even when more experienced women are available. This situation has become so troubling that many women have united to protest against gender inequality.

The first group imparted several valuable lessons, emphasizing the importance of respecting both men and women. They stressed the need for adopting a more modern mindset while leaving behind harmful traditional beliefs and retaining the positive ones.

After their presentation, they divided us into groups to answer questions about the topic. The first-place group received various snacks, as did the second and third groups, but ultimately, we all received a box of chocolate milk. We then took our first break and proceeded to the second group's presentation.

The second group focused on the issue of corruption, which is prevalent in Indonesia, primarily involving high-ranking government officials. They discussed specific cases related to this topic, including a judge who accepted a bribe to release a criminal who was about to be sentenced. Corruption is a pressing issue that demands greater attention and action, as it wastes our time and money. They also mentioned how the governments of many impoverished nations use public funds to live extravagantly, while citizens struggle to make ends meet. In my opinion, this practice is unjust, as it involves taking money from their own people to support lavish lifestyles, even as these same people struggle to put food on the table due to taxes.

Both presentations underscored the importance of mutual respect, regardless of gender, and the need to refrain from exploiting others for personal gain. (Christy, X.1)
